{"id":24,"date":"2011-02-04T09:42:32","date_gmt":"2011-02-04T17:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/homiegfunk.com\/?page_id=24"},"modified":"2017-11-28T23:52:24","modified_gmt":"2017-11-29T07:52:24","slug":"about-me","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.readlikeanerd.com\/?page_id=24","title":{"rendered":"About Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-238 alignleft\" style=\"margin: 5px 10px;\" title=\"Me\" src=\"http:\/\/www.homiegfunk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Me-180x300.jpg\" alt=\"Me\" width=\"166\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.readlikeanerd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Me-180x300.jpg 180w, http:\/\/www.readlikeanerd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Me.jpg 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 166px) 100vw, 166px\" \/><strong>Once upon a time..<\/strong><\/p> <p>When I was in the 2nd grade, my teacher held a contest to encourage her students to read.\u00a0 Whenever one of us completed a book, she would put a marble into the mason jar that was on our desks.\u00a0 At the end of the year, the marbles would be tallied and the winner with the most would get a pizza party for their desk group on the last day of school.<\/p> <p>There was a girl in my class who was always boasting about her reading accomplishments.\u00a0 She would proudly count her marbles out loud and comment on our meager collections, predicting her future victory.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t like her because she had always picked on me for being awkward and dorky, so I decided that I was going to win just to spite her.<\/p> <p>Over the next few months, I went to the library nearly every weekend and checked out the maximum books they&#8217;d let me have &#8211; ten.\u00a0 I read everything I could get my hands on, including the entire series of both Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys.\u00a0 I diligently filled out the required ditto worksheet and got my mother to sign them, compiling them in a carefully guarded, secret stack.\u00a0 I let the girl continue to brag about her jar having the largest volume of marbles; I let her think she was going to win.\u00a0 Then, on the last week of school when the deadline hit for reading credit, I turned in my pile of book reports and collected my enormous bounty of marbles.<\/p> <p>I beat her by almost 200 books.\u00a0 She was so upset that she cried.<\/p> <p>The moral of the story is: if you pick on the nerd for being a nerd, she is going to outnerd you.\u00a0 (Actually, the moral of the story is probably that I&#8217;m a terrible person for relishing the time I made a seven year old girl cry, but after that&#8230;)<\/p> <p>I feel that story is a very good representation of who I am today: nerdy, hungry, and pathologically spiteful.\u00a0 And &#8212; more relevant to the site I suppose &#8212; that I\u00a0 am an enthusiastic reader with an unquenchable thirst for non-fiction.\u00a0 In addition to my small personal library, I also have a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B002FQJT3Q?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=faithfaq-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B002FQJT3Q\">Kindle<\/a> that I carry around <em>everywhere<\/em> so I always have reading at my fingertips.<\/p> <p>&#8230;Plus I&#8217;ve been conditioned to believe that nerdery leads to delicious pizza, so now I&#8217;m like Pavlov&#8217;s dog for books.<\/p> <p>&nbsp;<\/p> <p>&nbsp;<\/p> ","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Once upon a time..
